Institute for Quality Communities Partners with City of Waurika

Waurika is a community of about 2,000 people that serves as the county seat for Jefferson County, along Oklahoma’s southern border, the Red River. The community has seen a number of recent milestones, including hosting a Smithsonian Exhibit, “The Way We Worked,” in which over 300 people volunteered to make a great exhibit come together. Other initiatives have also been activating and improving the community’s main street.

The Institute for Quality Communities has partnered with the city of Waurika, Oklahoma, to offer planning assistance, with the support of the Oklahoma Municipal League. Over 30 GCA students have been working with the city to solve problems such as walkability, accessibility, parks, empty buildings, and run-down side streets. After two site visits, the IQC is now working on developing their recommendations on how they can bring the city of Waurika back to life.
